Description

This sepia-toned print is done from the original charcoal drawing by M. Leone Bracker of the young Abe Lincoln studying with his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, in their southern Indiana log cabin. Abe is seated on the floor beside a three-legged stool on which rests a board on which Lincoln is shown writing. Nancy Lincoln is shown seated in a chair in front of the fireplace next to her son. The artist's name and the date are printed in the upper right corner of the image. Before beginning his work the artist spent time in southern Indiana researching the archives for descriptions of Nancy Hanks Lincoln and the type of home they would have had in the 1820s so that the scene would appear authentic.
