'I am satisfied that Dr. Daily is not a proper person to fill such a position & that his appointment will be very distasteful to the people at Madison & the church to which he belongs.' Autograph letter signed (ALS).

Crawfordsville June the 12th 1863 Hon A Lincoln President US— Dear Sir I see by the papers that Revd Wm M Daily is to be appointed Hospital Chaplain at Madison Indiana. I am satisfied that Dr. Daily is not a proper person to fill such a position & that his appointment will be very distasteful to the people at Madison & to the Church to which he belongs Very truly yours &c HS Lane
