Description

This print features a beardless Abraham Lincoln standing outside the door of A. Y. Ellis & Co. The store clerk is shown putting a large package in Lincoln's arm while he tips his hat with his right hand. The text below the image reads, "Just before Christmas in 1837, Abraham Lincoln does his holiday shopping in Springfield at A. Y. Ellis & Company on the west side of the Square where his intimate friend, Joshua Fry Speed, is a partner with Abner Y. Ellis and James Bell. Above this store Lincoln shared a sleeping room with Speed. This firm sold general merchandise." From the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
