Description

This is a political cartoon that shows Abraham Lincoln pondering on what seems to be the evolution of liberty in the United States. The cartoon features a large portrait of Lincoln, with one hand rubbing his chin in a thoughtful manner. Next to him is a text bubble that reads ". . .A New Birth of Freedom. . .?" Lincoln's gaze falls on a small globe, on the surface of which is visible a land mass representing the United States. Surrounding the U.S. are a list of words, "Permissiveness", "Abortions", "Drugs", "Pornography", "Deficit Spending", "Crimes", and "Strikes". The artist signed the bottom of the drawing with his name and the year in which it was made, 1972. The date "Feb. 12" is handwritten in blue pencil in the upper proper right corner. The title is also written in blue pencil in the upper margin. The portrait of Lincoln is the same as that used in other Ostendorf cartoons. (See ID# 71.2009.081.0648).
