Description
This poster featuring photographs of heroic statues and quotations from Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee was published by the Lincoln-Lee Legion, a temporance organization promoting the signing of abstinence pledges by children. At the top of the poster within a round border is a photograph of the bronze statue of President Abraham Lincoln by sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens located in Lincoln Park in Chicago, Illinois. Below the statue is a quotation from Abraham Lincoln's Address Before the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois, given on January 27, 1838. At the end of the first quotation is a rectangular border within which is a photograph of a heroic- sized statue of Robert E. Lee on horseback by French sculptor Antonin Mercié located in Richmond, Virginia. Below the Lee statue is a quotation attributed to Robert E. Lee but was actually from a forged letter and was never actually spoken by Lee: "Duty is the sublimest word in our language. Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more; you should not wish to do less." All of the above are framed within a larger, decorative, rectangular border.
