Description

This political cartoon was published as a supplement to the May 3, 1862, issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. President Abraham Lincoln is shown as a caricature of Sinbad carrying Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles on his shoulders out of the water. The ironclad vessel Merrimac and the ship Nashville are seen in the background. The artist's initials are printed in the lower right corner of the illustration. The caption is printed in the lower margin. Surrounding the cartoon on the page are various advertisements. A full-page advertisement for Frank Leslie's Pictorial History of the War of 1861-2 is on the reverse.
