Description
This hand-colored woodcut illustration from the March 2, 1861, issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper depicts the reception of President Lincoln in New York on the arrival of the special train at the Hudson River Railroad depot on Tuesday, February 19, 1861. Almost in front of the doors of the depot Superintendent Kennedy can be seen with his arm through President Elect Lincoln's leading him to his carriage. A large crowd of men and women are standing on the opposite side of the row of carriages. Three American flags on top of the depot are prominent in the illustration. This is one of the stops on the inaugural train trip to Washington, D. C. from Springfield, Illinois, in 1861. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
