Description

This lithograph features a beardless Abraham Lincoln as he looked in 1860 after being nominated as the presidential candidate for the Republican Party. This campaign print was done from a life portrait of Lincoln by artist Thomas Hicks. The painting was based on a photograph taken of Lincoln by Alexander Hesler on June 3, 1860, in Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln is depicted facing toward the viewer's right wearing a black suit, vest, and bow tie. The portrait features a cross-hatched technique. The shading fades and is less defined at the shoulders and mid chest. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
