Description

This lithograph is plate two in a series of six anti-Lincoln cartoon prints originally drawn in 1864 by artist L. H. Stephens. This print depicts a caricature of a tall, thin Abraham Lincoln wearing a black suit and white vest. He stands with his legs apart and exclaims, "This don't remind me of any joke!"; Secretary of War Stanton is depicted to the viewer's right and says, "Damn that boy General!" Secretary of State Seward stands on the viewer's left smoking a cigar and holding a bag labeled "W.H.S. Auburn." He says: "I feel the spirit of prophecy upon me Abra'am the war will be ended in 40 days from Mch 4th, but alas! we won't end it." Depicted standing between President Lincoln's legs, Secretary of Navy Welles rubs his eyes and cries, "Boo hoo! Boo hoo!" The title, "The Unhappy Family" is printed across the top of the image as well as in the margin below the image.
