Description

This photographic print done after a painting by Alonzo Chappel depicts President Abraham Lincoln on his deathbed surrounded by 24 people in a bedroom in the Petersen Boarding House. President Lincoln is shown lying diagonally across bed. The woman shown with her head on the bed weeping is Mrs. Lincoln. The man seated on the bed is one of the doctors. The names of the visitors shown in the image are printed near the bottom of the lower margin beneath the title. The names, left to right, are Gov. Farwell, Secretary McCulloch, Secretary Welles, General Farnsworth, Vice President Johnson, Judge Otto, Speaker Colfax, Dr. Stone, P. M. General Dennison, Surgeon C. A. Leale, Mrs. Lincoln, Major John Hay, Robert Lincoln, Senator Sumner, Surgeon C. S. Taft, Surgeon General of the Army Dr. Barnes, Attorney General Speed, Dr. Crane, Secretary Usher, Rev.
