Description
This tinted lithograph features a poem called "Confederate States Money" written by P. C. Carlton in the center. Between verses is a small Confederate flag within a patriotic shield. Above and below the shield are medallion portraits of Lee, Davis, Jackson, Johnson and Beauregard. Eight pieces of Confederate paper currency are pasted in an oval around the poem; the bills range in value from one dollar to one hundred dollars. In the corners of the print within the decorative border are small vignettes of Confederate triumphs during the war: the palmetto of South Carolina, the Virginia seal, an ironclad battle on the seas, and the charred ruin of Fort Sumter. For more information on this print, see pages 103-105 of "The Confederate Image" by Neely, Holzer, and Boritt. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
