Description

This is a political cartoon taken from the French newspaper, "Le Charivari". It features two soldiers fighting with swords as they move around a circle drawn on the ground beneath them. Within the circle is a sketch of the remains of a battle scene, and banners reading, "Merimac" and "Monitor". Two cities, Richmond and Washington, are labeled within the circle of battle. The artist's name is signed in the lower proper right corner of the image. The text below the image reads: -Un cercle vicieux. - Bon! Nous voila revenues au meme point qu' au commencement! . . . Translation: -A vicious circle - Well! We've returned to the same point as in the beginning! . . . Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
