Description

This lithograph, created as a premium for a new family magazine, Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner, and copyrighted on 8 April 1865, depicts a reception in a ballroom at the White House. Flanked by Mrs. Lincoln and Vice President Johnson, Lincoln presides over a crowd of hundreds including cabinet members, Generals Grant and Sherman (who were still quite occupied with the war at this point), and many more. The print was given to any purchaser of the magazine's first two issues, but the key was not included until the 4th issue to encourage subscribers. The room is ornate with hanging chandeliers and heavy drapery around the doors and windows. To see a pirated version of this print which had appeared as "Lincoln's Last Reception." see ID number 71.2009.081.1087.
