Description

This engraving featuring a head and shoulders portrait of President Abraham Lincoln was done from a photograph of him taken on February 9, 1864, in Washington, D. C., by photographer Mathew Brady. The portrait of Lincoln is surrounded by an elaborate border designed by W. Momberger. In the center at the top is a document labeled Proclamation of Freedom. To either side are illustrations depicting a family traveling through the war-torn south and several African Americans on the road. In the bottom left corner of the border is an illustration of a Roman soldier with sword in hand standing on a three-headed serpent which is labeled Rebellion. In the lower right corner of the border is an illustration of Columbia with the word label Peace. Between the two corner illustrations in the center is a drawing of two hands clasped together with the a banner below reading The Union Forever. A facsimile Lincoln signature is printed in the lower margin along with the title and the artist's and publisher's information.
