Description
This broadside is a proclamation by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, John A. Andrew, informing the people of Massachusetts that he with the consent of the Executive Council has appointed Thursday, the first day of June next, to be observed as a day of humiliation and prayer throughout the Commonwealth in compliance with President Johnson's proclamation postponed from May 25th as originally proclaimed to June 1st at the request of President Johnson. This was to be done in recognition of the recent bereavement of the nation, the assassination of President Lincoln on April 14, 1865. The proclamation is dated May 5, 1865. The proclamation is printed in large size font so that copies could be posted for all to read. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
