Description

This mezzotint engraving of the President Abraham Lincoln family was done from a painting by Francis. B. Carpenter for which he used photographs of each member of the family. The Lincoln family never posed together for any artist or photographer. In this print the Lincoln family is depicted as they were before Willie's death in February of 1862. They are shown gathered around an oval-shaped table: the youngest son, Tad, looks at a photograph album that President Lincoln is holding on his knee; Willie, the middle son, is seated in front of the table with Mrs. Lincoln seated to his right; and the oldest son, Robert, stands behind the table with his right hand resting on a chair. Ttwo thin black lines with a faded gold color thicker line between for a border for the print. The family members are identified in the margin just below the image.
