Description

This print is a reproduction of the artist's original 1967 pen and ink illustration of Abraham Lincoln as a surveyor. The scene features a 25-year-old Abraham Lincoln standing 6 feet, 4 inches tall, wearing a loose cotton shirt and vest with dark pants and boots. While holding a hatchet in his left hand and his hat in his right hand, Lincoln appears to be focusing on the compass. A bucket type container is on the ground behind Lincoln. A large tree and a split rail fence are in the background. Lincoln was appointed deputy county surveyor while living in New Salem, Illinois, as a young adult. He studied two books himself on the art of surveying in order to do the job. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
