Description
This postcard is a photograph of the Naval Group, one of four bronze statues anchoring the corners of the Lincoln Monument in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. Designed by Larkin Mead, the grouping shows a scene on a gunboat with a mortar poised for action. A boy, called a "powder monkey," is seated on the mortar and peers into the distance. A sailor to the viewer's left is kneeling with his hand on a mortar round. A sailor to the viewer's right holds a scope in his left hand. The caption is printed below the image near the bottom edge. The postcard reverse is divided. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
