Description

This lithograph features two large head and shoulders portraits of Presidents George Washington to the viewer's left and Abraham Lincoln to the viewer's right. Between the portraits the allegorical figure of Columbia crowns each portrait with a wreath while resting her right foot on the head of a sleeping lion. Broken shackles are depicted in front of the lion. To the left of the Washington portrait are three vignettes (from top to bottom) which depict the Boston tea party on Dec. 18, 1773; the writing of the Declaration of Independence in July 1776; and the surrender of Cornwallis to Washington on Oct. 12, 1781. There is a scroll underneath Washington that is titled "Declaration of Independence" with his birth and death dates written at the bottom. To the right of the Lincoln portrait are three vignettes depicting (top to bottom) the fall of Fort Sumter on April 14, 1861; a naval scene titled, "Progress;" and President Lincoln riding through Richmond on 6th April, 1865." There is another scroll underneath the Lincoln portrait with the title "Emancipation Proclamation 1862" and with his birth and death dates at the end. The title, "Columbia's noblest Sons" is printed in the bottom margin. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
