Description
This lithograph depicts the artist's version of the many visitors to President Abraham Lincoln's deathbed in the Petersen house early in the morning of April 15, 1865. This unique version shows the bed in the center of the image with President Lincoln facing the viewer. Surgeon Stone is seated on the right edge of the bed with his back to the viewer and facing Surgeon General Barnes who is holding a pocket watch in his left hand. Robert Todd Lincoln, oldest son of the president, is shown standing at the head of the bed weeping into a handkerchief. Fifteen other visitors are shown standing around the bed. Their names are identified in the lower margin just beneath the image: Mr. J. Ulke, Mr. Colfax, Postmaster Dennison, Mr. Farnsworth, Mr. G. Welles, Young Petersen, Chief Justice Chase, Mr. Peterson, Charles Sumner, Robert Lincoln, Surgeon Stone, Rufus F. Andrews, Surgeon General Barnes, Gen. Meade, Surgeon Crane, Gen. Halleck, Mr. Stanton, and Mr. Safford. The title and publisher's information are also printed in the lower margin. For more information on other Lincoln deathbed prints with various numbers of visitors present, see Lincoln Lore, number 1517, July, 1964.
