Description
This hand-colored lithograph features a three-quarter length portrait of President Abraham Lincoln possibly done for the 1864 presidential election campaign. He is holding a book on top of a table in his left hand and standing in front of a chair which is next to a pillar. His right arm hangs at his side. President Lincoln is depicted in a black frock coat, pants, vest, and bow tie. A blue drapery hangs behind Lincoln. A tassel is visible near the top edge of the print. The title and a quotation from Lincoln's speech at Cincinnati, Ohio, on September 17, 1859, are printed just below the image: "The people of these United States are the rightful masters of both Congresses and Courts, not to over-throw the Constitution, but to over-throw the men who pervert the Constitution."
