Description

This chromolithograph done from a painting by Eastman Johnson in 1868 depicts the artist's idea of a young Abraham Lincoln reading a book by firelight in the family's Indiana cabin. Abe is shown sitting in a chair beside the fireplace holding an open book in his hands. To Abe's left is a table with three containers on it and a jug and a basket underneath it. Two logs for the fire are behind and under Abe's chair. An iron has been placed in front of the fire. Implements used for cooking over the fire are leaning against or hanging from the side of the fireplace. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
