Description

This is a political cartoon taken from the French newspaper, "Le Charivari," page 80. The cartoon features an older gentlemen, well dressed, speaking with a younger sailor, and gesturing towards the ships at the dock as he speaks. Below the image the dialogue is printed: - Voulez-vous visiter mon vaisseau cuirasse. . . ? - Bien oblige! . . . il a peut-etre, comme le Merrimac, la bosse du suicide? . . . el sa manie n'aurait qu'a lui prendre quand je serais dedans! . . . merci!! . . . Translation: - Would you like to visit my ironclad ship? - Much obliged! Might it be, as the Merrimac, a "hump" of suicide? It operates as without he who takes it when I am in! . . . Thank you . . .
