Description
This colored lithograph depicts a young boy, probably in his late teens, seated beneath a tree and holding a rifle/bayonet. He has apparently fallen asleep. Tents of the military camp can be seen in the background. The title is printed in the margin below the image along with a verse that reads: "Without a murmur, he endured a service new and hard But wearied with a toilsome march, it chanced one night on guard, He sank, exhausted at this post and the grey morning found His prostrate form--a sentinel asleep upon the ground!
