Description

This etching is a political cartoon by Adalbert Volck, a Southern sympathizer living in Baltimore, Maryland, during the United States Civil War. This cartoon, one of the Confederate War Etchings series, depicts Albert S. Johnston's trip from California across Utah to and on east to join with the Confederate Army. There appears to be an Indian guide carrying a spear on horseback and another man on horseback. Johnston is leading a horse and two other men are on foot. The skull of an animal is in the foreground. The number 20 appears above the top left corner of the image. Original etching one of thirty published in Volck's "Confederate War Etchings."
