Description

This is a hand colored lithograph, featuring General Robert E. Lee's surrender of his army to General Ulysses S. Grant. In the foreground, General Grant is depicted slightly to the proper right of center, facing General Lee, with a paper in hand that reads, "Terms of Surrender". General Lee stands slightly to the proper left of center, and holds his hand out, ready to receive the contract. Two of Grant's soldiers stand behind him, and two of Lee's soldiers stand behind their general as well. Separating the two generals, in the very center of the image is a large tree, that differentiates the two sides--everything to the proper right is the North, and everything to the proper left is the South. Behind each general, stretches a long, winding line of his army. The North is shown celebrating, talking amongst themselves, running about, blowing horns, and waving the American flag. The South remains well-organized in their lines, waving flags of three alternating red and white stripes. Below the image appears the following text: "The Surrender of General Lee / and his entire army to Lieut General Grant April 9th, 1865. This memorable event terminated the Great Rebellion."
