Description

This lithograph is the artist's version of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre on the night of April 14, 1865. The view is from the orchestra pit showing the musicians with their instruments raised as Booth is in mid jump from the president's box. Booth's right hand is raised holding a dagger while he appears to be looking toward the orchestra pit. President Lincoln is shown in the center of the opening of the president's box with his right hand on the rail and his left hand is touching his head. Mrs. Lincoln is to the viewer's right with her left hand reaching toward the president's side. Major Henry Rathbone is shown standing to the president's left with his right hand extended toward Booth and his right hand on the rail. Audience members in the box to the viewers right do not appear alarmed at seeing Booth jumping to the stage. The spur from Booth's right foot is shown on the stage just below the president's box. The title and the publisher's information are printed in the lower margin. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
