Description

This is an embossed, color halftone print of President Abraham Lincoln’s speech known as “The Gettysburg Address” which he gave at the dedication of the National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on November 19, 1863. The text in calligraphic font is bordered by a wide floral border with small vignette portraits and images placed within. Going clockwise from the upper left corner the images are Gen. U. S. Grant, the United States Great Seal, Gen. R. E. Lee, the first national flag of the Confederacy (1861), the Soldiers National Monument, President Abraham Lincoln, the Lincoln Memorial, and the United States flag with 36 stars. "Copyright 1927-Society of Fine Arts, Inc. N.Y.", appears printed in blue ink in the lower left outer margin area, and "A. & G. MUNGO - MCMXXVI" (1926) appears printed in the lower right margin. (A. & G. for Antonio & Giuseppe Mungo, NYC, who were the artists). An antiqued gold metallic ink was used on the embossed areas in the border and in the title and the illuminated letter. The print was done on a medium-weight cream-colored wove paper stock. The original artwork for this print was presented to President Coolidge by the Italian League of New York and the Society of Fine Arts for exhibition in Washington in celebration of President Lincoln's birthday on February 12, 1927.
