- Handwritten letter, 25 cm, headed 'Springfield, Illinois, August 10th 1861', and signed by Richard Yates, Governor; William Butler, State Treasurer; O.M. Hatch, Secretary of State; Thomas L. Mather, Adjutant General; John Coon, Quartermaster General; and John Williams, Commissary General. The letter requests 'that Captain Thos. G. Pitcher of the 8th Infantry U.S.A. be appointed a Brigadier General of Illinois Volunteers.' Letter was written in a separate hand with space for each of the signatures after the position. There is a space for 'Auditor of Public Accounts' but it has not been signed. Letter signed (LS).

Springfield Illinois August 10th 1861 To His Excellency Abraham Lincoln President of the United States, Sir, The undersigned respectfully request that Captain Thos. G. Pitcher of the 8th Infantry U.S.A. be appointed a Brigadier General of Illinois Volunteers. Richd Yates – Governor. Auditor of Public Accounts. William Butler Treasurer. O. M.
