Description

This mezzotint engraving is a composite print with the head of President Abraham Lincoln superimposed on the figure and background of an earlier print by A.H. Ritchie showing South Carolina politician John C. Calhoun done in 1852. In the mid to late 1860s New York printmaker William Pate created a new engraving based on Ritchie's Calhoun engraving and replaced Calhoun's head with that of Lincoln. The print shows President Lincoln wearing a black frock coat, waist coat, and bow tie with a shawl wrapped over his right shoulder and around his back to be held at his waist in front with his right hand. His left hand rests on one of the documents on the table to his left. The documents are titled Constitution, Union, and Proclamation of Freedom. An American flag is draped to the floor to the viewer's left of the print with a globe on a stand in front of it. The title of the print and the publisher's information are printed in the lower margin. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
