Description

This engraving is a full-length composite portrait of Abraham Lincoln's head on the body of South Carolina politician John Calhoun. The engraver used a previously done engraving of John Calhoun then burnished out the head to replace it with the head of Abraham Lincoln done from a photograph taken of him on February 9, 1864. Lincoln, wearing a black cape over his black suit coat, vest, and bow tie, is standing beside a table with is left hand resting on a paper labeled "Constitution." Also shown on the table are pages labeled "Union" and "Proclamation of Freedom," several books, and a writing set. To Lincoln's right are a globe and a flag. The title and publisher's information are printed in the lower margin. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum.
