Description

This print is a reproduction of an oil painting by artist Reynolds Jones showing Abraham Lincoln sitting on the ground whittling a piece of wood and Mary Owens, to whom he eventually proposed, walking beside him. She had apparently just arrived on the stagecoach shown in the background. The leaves on the trees are in fall colors. The artwork was commissioned by the Chicago & Illinois Midland Railway Company to be used as calendar art. This print was used for their 1951 calendar. Pasted on the reverse is a sheet of brief explanatory text supplied by Lincoln authority, J. Monaghan. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
