Description

This print is a reproduction of an oil painting by artist Reynolds Jones showing Abraham Lincoln standing and speaking to two young men with a young boy watching. The river steamer "Talisman" can be seen on the water behind them. Early in 1832 Lincoln helped to pilot the Talisman almost one hundred miles up the Illinois and Sangamon Rivers almost to Springfield, Illinois. The artwork was commissioned by the Chicago & Illinois Midland Railway Company to be used as calendar art. This print was used for their 1950 calendar. Pasted on the reverse is a sheet of brief explanatory text supplied by Lincoln authority, J. Monaghan. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
