Handwritten response, 20 cm, to telegram sent by President Lincoln. Letter is on printed stationery headed "Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac" and dated 5 p.m., Feb. 16, 1865. Acknowledges telegram sent to Lt. Gen. Grant suspending execution of Private Geo. W. Brown of the 15 N.Y. Engineers. Meade states that there is no such person but there is a Private Geo. Roeth alias George Roeth Brown of the 15 N.Y. Engineers and that his execution of sentence has been suspended presuming that he is meant. He further states that the JAG has the records of Roeth Brown's case and that his execution had been suspended last fall. The execution slated for the next day had been ordered by the War Department.
