- Handwritten letter, 25 cm, headed 'U.S.A. Genl. Hospital, Wheeling, W. Va.,' dated Dec. 16, 1864, and signed by John Kirker, A.A. Surgeon USA, In charge. Recommends Rev. David Trueman, chaplain of the 1st Regt. W. Va. Vet. Cavalry, for the chaplaincy at the Hospital. Kirker writes that Trueman has served in the field since 1861, is now unable to serve in the field and has been temporarily assigned to duty at the hospital. A Rev. Drummond of Wheeling seeks the appointment as chaplain at the hospital but was asked to withdraw his application in favor of Trueman. Drummond declined. Docketed on verso. Autograph letter signed (ALS).
