Description
This color postcard features the heroic-sized, bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln, done by sculptor Andrew O'Connor, which stands in front of the State Capitol Building in Springfield, Illinois. Dedicated in 1918, the statue depicts a beardless Lincoln just before boarding the train for Washington, D. C., for his inauguration in March of 1861. The text of Lincoln's Farewell Address to his friends and neighbors is inscribed on the back of the granite slab behind the statue. The postcard reverse is divided and has narrative text printed on the left side. Also on the left side is a handwritten note in blue ink from Bob to Alice O'Reilly of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The number P45959 is printed along the top edge near the middle. The postmark is dated December of 1972. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
