Description

This colored lithograph depicts a Union soldier standing on a Confederate States of America flag in the center foreground, holding a saber aloft and an American flag. Encircling the top of the flag is a banner which reads, "Freedom to the Slaves." To the viewer's right other soldiers unlock shackles from the wrists and ankles of slaves. To the viewer's left, freed slaves enter a public school building and read a newspaper. In the right corner of the lower margin handwritten in ink is "C. Herbst © 1875, C.S. Army. On the reverse the text reads in part "All slaves...By Abraham Lincoln,...Pres...., January 1st, 1863." Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum.
