Description

This hand-colored lithograph depicts President Abraham Lincoln with his family posed around a small table. Since the Lincoln family never posed together for any artist or photographer, many artists used photographs of the individuals to compose a family scene for printing after Lincoln's death. President Lincoln is shown seated to the left of the table with one leg crossed over the other and holding a book in his left hand. Mrs. Lincoln in a light blue dress stands to his right holding a fan in her right hand. A little boy with a drum is shown next to Mrs. Lincoln. He is apparently supposed to represent Tad, the Lincolns' youngest son, although there is no resemblance to him. The Lincoln's middle son, Willie, stands leaning his right arm on the oppoosite side of the table from his father. Robert Lincoln, the oldest son, dressed in his military uniform stands next to Willie with his right hand tucked into his jacket while his left hand rests on the handle of his sword. An urn with a floral display stands on the table near Willie. A small red book rests near the front of the table. Trees are shown directly behind President and Mrs. Lincoln and also in the background. Beyond the trees a sailing vessel can be seen in the distance on a body of water, presumably the Potomac River. The whole image is surrounded by a border of two thin black lines. The publisher's information and the title are in the margin below the image. Just below the title is the phrase, "Respectfully Dedicated to the People of the United States." This print is very similar to item 71.2009.081.1876. The main difference is that the faces in this print 71.2009.081.1877 do not look as realistic as those in the previously mentioned print. Print 71.2009.081.1878 is the same lithograph although it is not hand-colored. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
