Description

This color print features a "song" written by poet Vachel Lindsay including some historical events from the state of Virginia's past. At the top of the page is a large circle formed by four black lines. Within the circle are a background design in orange ink on top of which is printed the title, "The Virginians Are Coming Again." Also within the circle are the poet's directions for the reader: "This song is to be chanted to your own unwritten troubadour chant, invented by yourself after reading it many times yourself aloud out-of-doors." Beneath the circle printed in green ink are the first three verses of the song. A row of five ink and pen drawings separates the first three verses from the last verse of the song. In the bottom left corner handwritten in black ink is the number 483. In the lower right corner is the poet's handwritten signature in black ink. A recording of this song being vocalized in 1931 can be heard by copying and pasting the following link in a browser: http://writing.upenn.edu/pennsound/x/Lindsay.php Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
