Description

This poster announced one airing of the show in the American Heritage Series titled "Lincoln: Trial by Fire" produced for television by David L. Wolper for the celebration of the United States Bicentennial during the 1970s. The series name is printed in red ink at the top of the poster. Superimposed on a background of a reproduction of a draft of the Emancipation Proclamation is a half-length portrait of President Abraham Lincoln seen to the viewer's right and the ruins of Richmond, Virginia, to the viewer's left and across the width of the poster below the portrait. In the lower margin printed in red ink is the full title of the episode and the viewing details. This episode focused on the struggle for power between Commander-in-Chief Lincoln and General George McClellan, commander of the Army of the Potomac, and the events leading to the Emancipation Proclamation. The reverse side of the poster features images and captions on the topic of "Reporting the Civil War" prepared by the editors of American Heritage Magazine. The top section of the poster illustrates the process of "field artists" located on the battlefields making sketches which were then rushed by courier to the newspaper offices such as Leslie's Illustrated and Harper's Weekly where the sketches were engraved on wood blocks and then printed. The lower section discusses the photography available during the time of the Civil War including examples. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
