Description

This color print is a family portrait of James A. Garfield's family. He is the largest figure and is seated in the center of the foreground with his right hand in his breast pocket and his body and gaze turned towards PL. In the PR foreground is his mother, who wears a white bonnet and gray flowered shawl and holds an open book. In the PL foreground (on the other side of Garfield) is his wife, who wears a long-sleeved purple dress with a white bow around her neck. In the background are their children, starting with Abram, Irvin, and James on the PR side; they are standing, wearing green/gray suits, and are located in front of an oval-shaped portrait of George Washington. Their other children, Harry and Mollie, are standing on the PL side. Harry wears a brown suit with a polka dotted bowtie and Mollie wears a green dress with a black bow around her neck and holds a white handkerchief in her left hand. Her right arm rests on the back of her mother's chair. Below the image are all the names of the family in the photograph, and the title of the piece, "Ja. Garfield and Family" is centered amongst these names.
