Description

This lithograph features the text of the Proclamation of Emancipation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. It is elaborately printed, with the text mostly in script, and with six vignette illustrations including a portrait of Lincoln within an oval frame. Other illustrations include a Union soldier returning home to his family, an eagle and other allegorical figures. A publisher's note at the end of the text states, "An original picture of which this is an engraved copy was designed and executed with a common pen and presented to Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States by A. Kidder, Publisher." Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
