Description

Fragment of black silk with unfinished edges. An image of Abraham Lincoln cut into an ovular shape is tacked to the cloth. A piece of paper is included and reads: "Cloth from the bier on which Abraham Lincoln, Salmon P. Chase and Charles Sumner were laid, in the Rotunda of the Capitol at Washington. Taken off and given to me in 1876 by Captain Blackford, Chief of Capitol Police. --C.E. Rice." Part of The Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
