Description
Small American flag is printed with thirteen red and white stripes and a small blue field in the top corner with thirty-six stars. Black cotton strips trim the flag around three edges on both the front and back. The same fabric trims the starry field on the front and back. Two black strips are tacked on the striped field resembling the number eleven. The flag was made after the 36th state, Nevada, was admitted to the Union on March 21, 1864. The black fabric was added to the flag to be used as a symbol of mourning at the time of President Abraham Lincoln's funeral in 1865. See "Lincoln Lore" issue number 1522, December, 1964, for more information about the flags in this collection. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
