Description
Two epaulets worn by General Ambrose Burnside. Each epaulet is tab-shaped with a rounded end that fits over the shoulder and features a paperboard core covered in gold brocade. Coiled brass wire trims the rounded end, and coiled tassels fall down the shoulder. The underside is lined with yellow silk and is padded and tufted at the rounded end. A buttonhole is notched into the tab end. "G. Cur(?) 4.50 (?)" is handwritten on the reverse of one of the epaulets. The rows of coiled fringe on top are 3/8 inch in diameter. The rows of coiled fringe underneath are 1/4 inch in diameter. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
