Description
American flag displayed as a patriotic banner. Flag is entirely made of wool bunting except for the stars, which are made of cotton. It has seven red stripes and six white stripes and features thirteen white stars on a blue field in the top proper right corner. The stars have been arranged in a square with one star in the center. A piece of rope is attached to the top proper right corner. The flag has been backed by supporting fabric during previous conservation and mounted on a tan fabric-covered board. The current dimension of the mount is 37" across, and 33 1/2" high. According to Helen Nicolay, the daughter of Lincoln's secretary John G. Nicolay, this flag draped the Ford's Theatre presidential box in which Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865. For more information about items in this collection related to John G.
