Description
Scrap of stained white towel tacked to a swatch of white woven cloth. The cloth is mounted at the bottom of a piece of lined white paper. The following is handwritten in black ink at the top of the paper: "A piece of towel used in dressing the wound of President Lincoln after the assassination on the 14th of April 1865. The President was taken to the house of a Mr. Peterson and his wound dressed. The Peterson's son was surgeon's steward with Dr. C.N. White on board the U.S.S. Roanoke, and this piece was given me by Dr. White. Laurel [?] T. Browne." The following is handwritten on the reverse of the paper: "Piece of the towel used in dressing the wounds of President Lincoln, Apl. 14 1865."
