Indiana, Knox County, Vincennes. William Henry Harrison (1773 - 1841) was born in Berkeley, Virginia. He studied classics at Hampden-Sydney College before obtaining a commission in the First Infantry of the Regular Army. He served as aide-de-camp to General “Mad Anthony” Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. In 1798 he became Secretary of the Northwest Territory and was its first delegate to Congress. In 1801 he became Governor of the Indiana Territory and served for 12 years. Harrison was engaged in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1809 against Tecumseh’s confederacy. Made a brigadier general, he was given command of the Army of the Northwest during the War of 1812. Harrison was elected the 9th President of the United States in 1840. He died in office on April 4, 1841. This is the shortest term of any president in American history. He is the grandfather of Benjamin Harrison, the twenty-third president of the United States.
