Description

This postcard features a reproduction of a photograph of President Abraham Lincoln from the collection of the J. B. Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. The original photograph was inscribed "For Mrs. Lucy G. Speed from whose pious hand I accepted the present of an Oxford Bible twenty years ago. Washington, D. C., October 3, 1861. A. Lincoln." Lucy Speed was the mother of Lincoln's close friend Joshua F. Speed from their New Salem, Illinois, days. Below the image is the special postmark stamped in black ink reading "Lincoln Society of Philately Conv. Station, Louisville, Kentucky, May 18, 1969." The postmark cancels the five-cent stamp commemorating the Battle of Gettysburg for the Civil War Centennial. The postcard reverse is blank.
