Description

This linen postcard features a front view of the Lincoln Monument located in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. President Abraham Lincoln, his wife, Mary, and three of his four sons are buried in the tomb beneath the monument. A flight of stairs on each side of the rotunda leads to the terrace. Four bronze groupings representing each branch of the military during the Civil War anchor the corners of the base of the obelisk. In front of the obelisk and above the entrance stands a full-length statue of Lincoln by Larkin Mead, designer of the Monument, depicting Lincoln as President. A light-colored border surrounds the image with the caption printed in the top margin. The number 4A-H421 is printed in the lower right corner of the border. The postcard reverse is divided and has a handwritten note from Nancy Rogier to Mrs. F. M. Edwards of Miami Beach, Florida, on the left side. The Decatur, Illinois, postmark is dated Feb. 20, 1945.
